Objectives

Ecological restoration to minimise the impact of human pressure in periurban areas

- Incorporation of restoration techniques to reduce environmental degradation.
- Planting of hygrophilous species to reduce fire risk.
- A more environmentally-friendly approach by the local population.

The objective in restoring natural micro-species in areas of widespread development is achievement of biological diversity in order to reduce human presence within them and, at the same time, increase edaphic humidity so as to encourage more hygrophilous species and reduce fire risk during drought periods. In fact, it is a question of creating a mosaic of species, with artificial irrigation facilitating the growth of plant species that are more resistant to the typical natural risks of the most xerophilous Mediterranean areas.

Summary
...............................................................................................................
One of the characteristics of the areas in the Nature Reserve Network of Barcelona Provincial Council is that they contain natural habitats that have been subjected to strong human pressure due to the proximity of built-up areas. This constant coming and going of people that results in degradation of the surroundings, which in turn is conducive to the spread of forest fires and the accumulation of all kinds of rubbish dumps. In this mosaic of periurban natural habitats, the aim is to incorporate replanting and ecological restoration techniques that contribute to reducing environmental degradation.
At the same time, the change in the appearance of these periurban natural areas encourages a more environmentally-friendly attitude by the local population, which facilitates subsequent conservation. Therefore, environmental results lead not only to biological improvement of the periurban natural surroundings, but also to a proportional decrease in fire risk and recreational pressure, which in turn raises environmental awareness among the local population.
