  The Natural Areas Department of Barcelona Council is promoting a LIFE project, co-financed by the European Union, consisting of a sustainable local planning proposal for the Barcelona metropolitan area.
The partners in this project are: Barcelona Provincial Council, Santa Coloma de Gramenet Council, Mollet del Vallès Council, and the Agricultural Park Consortium of Baix Llobregat.
This LIFE project includes three pilot initiatives (a restoration programme for periurban areas in Serralada de Marina park; the Europa arboretum in the municipality of Mollet del Vallès; and an arboretum with traditional varieties of fruit trees in the Baix Llobregat Agricultural Park) and a programme to promote the project and its results.
Approval of this LIFE project represents recognition and support by the European Union and the Barcelona Provincial Council for the management and protection of the Nature Reserve Network of which Serralada de Marina Park and the Baix Llobregat Agricultural Park form part.

Objectives
...............................................................................................................

The overall objective of the LIFE-GREEN BELT is to promote balanced use of land and the environment in the Barcelona Metropolitan Region, and, in particular, actions that affect the organisation of land not earmarked for development in the region, consisting of natural areas and periurban agriculture.

The LIFE-GREEN BELT project, developed within the framework of the Nature Reserve Network managed by the Barcelona Provincial Council, meets the need to protect land in the face of intense and widespread development by integrating the environment and sustainable development within local regulations.

The LIFE-GREEN BELT project develops three restoration initiatives for degraded periurban areas, which mitigate development pressure and enhance the quality of the landscape in densely populated areasl.

The initiatives are aimed at consolidating natural and agricultural areas which, despite their biological potential, have been subjected to environmental stress in recent decades. This has prevented any natural regeneration.

Project description
...............................................................................................................

The LIFE-GREEN BELT project consists of three pilot projects and an initiative to promote the programmatic and managerial aspects of the Nature Reserve Network of Barcelona Provincial Council.
Three areas were chosen within the Barcelona Metropolitan Region for implementation of these three pilot initiatives:

1. Ecological restoration to minimise the impact of human pressure in periurban areas of Santa Coloma de Gramenet.
2. The Europa arboretum. Replacement of development land with a periurban green space in the municipality of Mollet del Vallès.
3. Establishment of an arboretum and a nursery to recover traditional species and varieties of fruit trees in the Baix Llobregat Agricultural Park.

Starting with these experiences, the LIFE-GREEN BELT project aims to make these areas into a point of reference for limiting the growth of built-up land, and at the same time guarantee increased biodiversity of the landscape and give them a social and productive function. A further objective regarding the Agricultural Park, is to strengthen elements of the landscape to deal with degradation arising from widespread development.
Specifically the initiatives aim to:
- increase the amount of water in the soil (by using waste water resources and replacing the most fragile vegetation) in order to encourage natural regeneration;
- consolidate green areas which act as a buffer to development;
- recover traditional species and varieties of fruit trees.

The project includes a detailed programme for publicising the experiences.

Expected results
...............................................................................................................

- Consolidation at the local level of the experience of the Nature Reserve Network of Barcelona Provincial Council as a local planning system.
- Landscape restructuring applicable to almost the whole area of the Barcelona Metropolitan Region
- Application of a model to de-fragment the metropolitan landscape and contribute to the establishment of compact land use.
