The Europa arboretum. Replacement of land for development
with a periurban green area (Mollet del Vallès)
- - Consolidation of a green space within a highly
developed and industrialised area.
- - Setting up of an educational task, also involving
play, with a tour of the arboretum
The project aims to set up an area that
will be the main link joining the town of Mollet del Vallès
and the agricultural and forestry area of Gallecs, which
surrounds the built-up area, by replacing land clearly
identifiable as earmarked for development with a periurban
green space.
The project basically consists of planting trees in
the area using the main European Mediterranean species.
This will create a periurban park of natural and botanical
interest and increase knowledge of European vegetation.
It will also provide a recreation area for the residents
of Mollet and other visitors.
The site allocated for setting up the arboretum is
ideal due to the topography of Mollet del Vallès
and the adjoining area, as it is one of the most extensive
and visually attractive. In addition, the existing network
of rural roads will serve as a framework for setting
up routes and organising plantations in a parallel and
similar way.

Summary

The Vallès plain is within the metropolitan region
of Barcelona and is located in the industrial heart of
the Vallès Oriental region. Although it has no
particular natural, biological, or geological interest,
the area as a whole is of great environmental importance
with regard to biological corridors. The Vallès
plain is one of the few existing green corridors between
the coastal mountain range and the Catalan pre-coastal
mountain range.
On this land in the Vallès depression, agricultural
crops, industry, road infrastructure, and important built-up
areas still exist side by side. The environmental outcome
will be consolidation of a green area as a buffer zone
to contain strong development, industrial, and infrastructure
pressure. This area supports one of the few biological
corridors of the Vallès plain, which connects the
coastal and pre-coastal mountain ranges. The arboretum
will help to keep land development inertia in check and,
on the contrary, foster connectivity between natural and
agricultural areas, which the overall project of the Nature
Reserves Network of the Barcelona Provincial Council maintains
as a priority.
